CEFR stands for Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It provides a standardized framework for assessing language proficiency across Europe in levels from A1 to C2.

The CEFR test covers all five core language skills:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Language elements
  • Writing

The goal is to assess practical communication skills in real-life situations – at work, in everyday life and in academic contexts. The level of difficulty depends on the selected language level.

The exam is divided into two main parts:

  • Oral section (usually conducted as a paired or individual interview)
  • Written section (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, language elements, written expression)

The duration of the exam varies depending on the level. The exam usually lasts between 100 and 220 minutes. All assessments are conducted by certified examiners in accordance with official CEFR assessment standards.

A certificate in accordance with the CEFR standards is recognised throughout Europe – by the authorities, educational institutions and companies. However, this certificate is not always sufficient for all purposes and organisations. It is therefore important that you check before booking your CEFR exam whether the certificate is sufficient for your purposes and is recognised by the relevant institutions.

Dates and fees for the CEFR test

We regularly offer CEFR tests for the following proficiency levels. 

How to register for a CEFR test – step by step

You can register conveniently using our online form or by email. If you are unsure of your current level, we offer a free placement test.

Our language exams are usually held on Mondays. If there are no suitable dates available, we are happy to discuss individual arrangements with you.

Participants in Chemnitz usually take the exam in person at our office in Chemnitz. For participants outside Chemnitz, we offer online tests with live video monitoring. For this you will need a stable internet connection and a laptop or PC with a camera and a microphone.

Our examiners are certified under the official CEFR standards. Assessments are conducted fairly, transparently, and in line with established criteria.

In most cases, your results will be available within one week. Your certificate will be sent to you by post or can be collected in person from our Chemnitz office.

CEFR C1.2 German Exam

The CEFR certificate officially recognises your language skills. In the C1.2 exam, you demonstrate almost native-speaker language competence. You effortlessly understand spoken and written content, summarise information and express yourself with great precision and nuance – even when dealing with complex topics. The exam is made up of the test competences of reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar comprehension.

Important information before booking a C1.2 language test:

  • Please ensure that a CEFR certificate is sufficient and recognised for your purposes.

  • You determine the language level to be tested at your own responsibility. If you have not previously attended a language course and are therefore not aware of your language level, we will be happy to conduct a free placement test. Please contact us for this.

  • A stable internet connection is required to take the test online, as well as a laptop/computer with a microphone and camera.

CEFR C1.1 German Exam

Do you need a certificate to officially confirm your German C1.1 language skills? This is possible with the CEFR certificate. The C1.1 exam confirms that you can use the German language flexibly and effectively at work, at university and in everyday life. You will be able to understand demanding texts, present complex topics in a structured way and express yourself effortlessly and precisely. The competences tested include listening and reading comprehension, writing, speaking and grammar skills.

Please ensure this before registering for the CEFR C1.1 exam:

  • The CEFR certificate is not always sufficient for some purposes. Therefore, please check in advance whether the certificate is recognised for your purposes.

  • You are responsible for determining your own language level. If you are not sure of your language level, we will be happy to carry out a placement test in advance. Please contact us in good time for this.

  • A stable internet connection and the availability of a laptop/computer with a camera and microphone are required to take the online exam.

CEFR B2 German Exam

With the CEFR German exam, you can officially prove your German language skills at level B2. In the B2 exam, you prove that you can understand complex texts and discussions, even on abstract topics. You can converse spontaneously and fluently, express your opinion clearly and present advantages and disadvantages in an argumentative manner. The exam consists of several parts that test writing, listening, reading, speaking and grammar.

Please make sure of the following before booking your CEFR German B2 exam:

  • Please check beforehand whether a CEFR certificate is sufficient and recognised for your purposes.

  • You decide at your own responsibility at which level you want to test your German language skills. If you have not taken a language course before and are therefore not sure what level you have, you are welcome to take a free placement test with us. Please contact us in advance.

  • If you would like to take an exam online, you must have a stable internet connection and a laptop/computer with a camera and microphone.

CEFR A2 German Exam

The CEFR certificate (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) can officially confirm your German language skills at level A2. The A2 exam tests whether you can understand and use frequently used expressions and sentences on familiar topics. You can hold short conversations about everyday topics such as family, shopping, work or your neighbourhood and exchange simple information. Reading and listening comprehension, speaking, writing and grammar will be tested.

CEFR B1 German Exam

Do you already have German language skills at level B1 and just need to have them officially confirmed? Then you can do this with the CEFR exam (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) B1. With the B1 exam, you show that you can express yourself clearly on familiar topics. You understand the most important information from conversations using standard language and can communicate in typical everyday situations in German-speaking countries. The exam tests your writing, reading, listening, speaking and grammar skills.

Please read the following information before booking a CEFR German B1 exam:

  • If you wish to use the certificate for specific purposes, please check in advance whether a CEFR certificate is recognised.

  • Choosing the right language level is your own responsibility. If you are not sure of your language level, we can organise a free placement test in advance. Please contact us in advance.

  • If you would like to take the test online, please ensure that you have a stable internet connection and a computer/laptop with a camera and microphone.

CEFR A1 German Exam

With the CEFR exam (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), you can have your German language skills officially certified for German level A1 without having attended a language course beforehand. In the A1 exam, you show that you can understand and use simple sentences to express basic needs. You can introduce yourself, answer simple questions about yourself and communicate in very everyday situations if the other person speaks slowly and clearly. The CEFR exam tests the competences of reading, writing, grammar, speaking and listening.

German Course B2

In this language course in Chemnitz, you will extend your good grounding in the German language. Among other things, you will develop your knowledge on the topics of education, leisure time, working life and travel experiences, and learn how to word letters and invitations.
